Do You Fear Change?

Many changes rear their ugly heads in today’s chaotic environment and those changes often lead to fear. Of course, fear can be paralyzing, often leading to inaction. When facing a change, most people invariably feel insecure, lost and overwhelmed. Whatever your fear—making decisions, changing careers, health care decisions, leaving a relationship—you must learn to push through to a resolution or suffer the consequences of inaction.

In several of our seminar and keynote presentations, we refer to the classic bestseller by Dr. Susan Jeffers: Feel the Fear … and Do It Anyway. The title tells all. Susan shares a not-so-obvious truth that it’s okay to feel fear when facing change. Many people feel they’re the only ones who experience fear. The key, of course, is that you “Do It Anyway!”

In her bestseller, Dr. Jeffers inspires readers with dynamic techniques and profound concepts that have helped countless people grab hold of their fears and move forward with their lives.

I recently came across this unique video which speaks volumes in a mere 1 minute 28 seconds to the importance of facing your fears. Not a word is spoken but the visuals will captivate you and certainly lead to deep thought on this very critical subject. The last five seconds will reveal what happens when you finally face your fears. Take a look!

Take a Moment – Make a Difference

At the end of this article, I’m going to request that you take a few moments out of your busy day to watch a short video. Many of you will immediately dismiss the thought as you simply don’t have time for that nonsense. You might want to rethink that train of thought.

My request isn’t for me. I’ll never know whether you watched it or not. My request will benefit YOU and possibly many others as a result of your seeing it. Let me explain.

Far too many times, we unintentionally pass up opportunities to “pay it forward” for the simple reason that we don’t have time. We’re too absorbed with “busy work,” we’re off to a meeting, we feel we have more important things to do. What’s more important than influencing the life of another in a positive way?

Let’s try a quick re-frame here. How would you feel if a teacher, counselor, or coach had an opportunity to influence your child or grandchild in a way that would modify his/her life forever in a very positive way? Warm and appreciative feeling, right? How would you feel if that key person in your child’s live could have but didn’t make that difference? What if they were too busy … had to make a phone call … or felt it simply wasn’t that important? Disheartened, resentful, shocked? I would be!

We have no way of knowing how many possibilities we’ve overlooked in the past. Disregard that aspect. Focus instead on the many opportunities awaiting us in the days ahead and begin immediately to seek them out. Don’t let even one potential situation pass you by.

If you’ve ever wondered if you can, in fact, influence others, watch this video of famed author and speaker Wayne Dyer sharing the story of young Teddy whose life was totally transformed by a single teacher … interestingly enough, the teacher’s life was transformed by young Teddy as well. This story may well impact your future thinking and actions. If so, it’s certainly worth the few minutes to view this touching video. You may also have to wipe away a tear …

Face Your Fear and Prosper

We all have fears of one sort or another. The fear matters not—it’s how you react to that fear that makes the difference! As a high school student, I would take a failing grade before I would stand in front of the class and make a verbal presentation. Just thinking about speaking in front of my fellow students caused me to sweat, shake, and get sick to my stomach. Rather than facing that fear and attempting to overcome it, I chose to take a failing grade. Today, I speak for a living in front of small groups and massive audiences at major conventions all over North America. I just wished I had addressed that fear much earlier in my career.

Seven years ago, I was invited to keynote and conduct a breakout for the Governor’s Workforce Development Conference for the State of Wisconsin. I was privileged to be sharing the platform with the Governor of Wisconsin. When I arrived at the beautiful Kalahari Resort and Convention Center in Wisconsin Dells I met what appeared to be a very nervous young man. He was introduced to me as a very talented webmaster for the State by the name of Stu Voeck. Apparently Stu had just been given the task of introducing me to this very large conference audience, and he was scared stiff as he had never before done anything like this even though he was currently involved with Toastmasters. In addition, his left arm was in an immobilizer to limit the movement of a dislocated elbow.

Having quite some time before my address, we sat down, relaxed, got to know one another and chatted about Stu’s sudden challenge/opportunity. I call it that because he was actually excited about this opportunity and what it might mean for him in the future. At the same, he had very strong reservations about walking out on that stage, even though it would only be for a minute or two.

I shared a few insights with Stu, we weighed a few options and I couldn’t help but note that he began to relax just a bit. Long story short … Stu marched out on that stage in front of a massive audience and delivered one of the best introductions I had ever enjoyed. He left me feeling that I had better live up to the expectations he had given the audience. I don’t know if it was his pride or his relief that lifted him off that stage … but I could have sworn I saw a hop and a skip in that exit. I’m certain that no one in that audience knew that was Stu’s first speaker introduction.

Stu did advance to the level of Advanced Toastmaster – Bronze and served as club president and received an award from Toastmaster International for his club performance during his presidency. Why do I feel I’m going to end up working for him?

Ironically, a year later, Stu was called upon once more to introduce me as the keynote speaker at an Association of Job Search Trainers conference in Palm Springs, California. I almost didn’t recognize him as he delivered a well-polished, very professional introduction. He had indeed grown a great deal in just one year.

To this day, we laugh about that experience and how far he’s come from that initial fear and how well he faced it and overcame it. I’ve been following Stu’s career since that time as we still speak on a weekly, sometimes daily, basis. He’s attained many goals and continues to raise the bar for himself. I’m proud and privileged to call him my friend! You might just soon be attending a national conference where another very shaky rookie walks out on a stage and introduces the keynote speaker as Stu Voeck!

Watch for him and realize you wouldn’t be seeing him up there and enjoying his presentation if he hadn’t faced his fear many years ago. You, too, can enjoy that same success! Will you?

A Salute to Unsung Heroes

I’m a strong believer in the idea that “things happen for a reason.” I always have been. I know it isn’t a popular belief, but it works for me. I’ve seen proof in many aspects of my own life, and I struggle to deny those instances. I recently experienced a couple of those situations within a month’s time.

When a client contacts us for a consultation, facilitation of a seminar, or a keynote presentation, it’s pretty safe to assume that they’re looking for a return on their investment. Of course, we make certain that they get just that … and more. However, every now and then, I’m blessed to be able to walk away from an assignment knowing I’ve gained as much, or more, than those I actually served.

That happened just recently twice within a very short period of time. I was invited to keynote the Michigan Recreation and Parks Association Therapeutic Recreation Institute Conference in northern Michigan. A few weeks later, I traveled to Southern Florida on behalf of EBS Healthcare to spend the entire day with the Physical and Occupational Therapists of the West Palm Beach Schools.

Both groups, although located 23 hours apart, share a number of remarkable characteristics! It’s very obvious that it takes a very special person to be a recreation, physical, or occupational therapist. After meeting, greeting and interacting with these very dynamic professionals, I couldn’t help but associate them with two other groups I highly respect … teachers and soldiers! Members of all three groups are very intelligent, experienced, well-trained, and tremendously dedicated to their work and those they so skillfully serve. The therapists are also extremely underpaid for what they accomplish on a daily basis for students, teachers and parents. However, it’s quite obvious they aren’t driven by money … they love what they do and would probably do it for nothing if necessary. I feel the same holds true for both teachers and soldiers as well.

The time I spent with these Michigan and Floridian therapists was truly priceless. It’s such a joy to be surrounded by such genuinely dedicated people who are concerned about their industry, each other, and those they serve. Their work is indeed exceptionally demanding and yet also extremely rewarding. My personal concern is that they, like teachers and soldiers, are too often taken for granted or simply unappreciated. Far too few people are even aware of what these therapists do or the challenges they must face in their quest to serve and support. And yet I couldn’t help but notice that these unsung heroes simply radiate enthusiasm and devotion!

I’d like to thank Kristine Kading of the Michigan Recreation and Parks Association Therapeutic Recreation Institute, Jill Parmenter of EBS Healthcare of Pennsylvania, and the West Palm Beach Schools for providing me with truly gratifying experiences and the opportunity to meet such magnificent people. In return I’d like to unofficially proclaim the next 30 days as “Hug a Therapist Month.” You definitely won’t regret it and they assuredly deserve it!

Wanna Know a Secret?

It’s that time of night once again when I find my mind wandering in various directions. It’s just a little after midnight, and I’m sitting on my deck watching the reflection of a bright moon on a very calm lake. A view like this certainly enhances concentration even though the temperature is a little lower than I like.

Tonight I’m thinking about something I read on the plane coming home from Florida last weekend. I have a couple of close friends who are currently dealing with some personal challenges. While they don’t know one another, I see several commonalities in their dilemmas. They both want something very badly, but both are uncertain as to how to achieve it. Both involve major life changes, I think we all have to face this situation at one time or another in our lives.

In Robert Collier’s book, The Secret of the Ages, the author states:

“You can have anything you want in life provided that you …

  1. know exactly what you want
  2. want it badly enough
  3. confidently expect to attain it
  4. persistently determine to obtain it, and
  5. are willing to pay the price of its attainment.”

I wonder, as I look back at his words, if this is really a secret. Sounds pretty much like common knowledge to me. However, maybe we treat it as a secret, because those steps are spoken only in whispers … maybe out of fear to attempt any one or all of them. If nothing else, it’s a fine checklist that may do nothing more than make us acknowledge the fact that maybe what we thought was a major desire, really isn’t. On the other hand, it’s certainly a great blueprint revealing what it’s going to take to achieve anything that may appear unattainable.

If it’s something you truly desire, scan the list, be honest with yourself, and set your course to achieve it. People do it everyday. Will you?

Gridiron Strategy Reflects True Leadership!

For those of you who aren’t football fans … don’t tune out. This is not a football story. Instead, you’re about to hear a true tale of compassion, integrity, class, teamwork and leadership!

Visualize, if you will, a typical Friday night high school football game. This one happens to be a contest between the Maryville Spoofhounds (don’t even ask!) and the St. Joseph Benton Cardinals … two rival schools about 42 miles apart situated near the Missouri/Kansas border. It really wasn’t much of a game as Maryville was leading 46-0 as the clock wound down to the final play of the game. It looked like an obvious shut out for the Spoofhounds! Those who may have left early due to the lopsided score may have missed the play of the century!

Two high school football coaches + 21 football players + supportive fans joined forces to produce what must be classified as the CLASS ACT of the season! With time for only one more play left on the clock, Cardinals coach Dan McCamey called a time out and ran out on the gridiron to talk to the Spoofhounds and their coach at midfield. He quickly explained that he had a 15-year-old freshman running back with Down Syndrome who had spent the entire season on the bench. Every Friday night he had begged the coach to get into a game.

The two teams lined up for the last play of the game after the coach allowed young Matt Ziesel to join the team on the field. Matt miraculously broke free of a tackler and ran 60 yards for the touchdown that put his Cardinals on the scoreboard. Matt was in seventh heaven as was his family, fans, and teammates. In fact, so was the other team as everyone but Matt knew that the Spoofhounds had allowed him to score.

Here’s another prime example of a good news story that very few people ever heard about. We need stories like this now more than ever before. Those involved on that special Friday night treasured that last play of the game and will never forget it. Years from now, each of those involved will look back with pride and cherish the memory of that special touchdown run by Matt Ziesel!

None of this would have happened if it hadn’t been for the leadership demonstrated by those two coaches and the teamwork displayed by the other 21 players on the field as Matt ran his heart out. I think some future leaders walked off that field that night feeling a little better about themselves and the world in general.

The Cardinals lost the battle that night … 46-6. But they won the war! In fact, both teams did!

See the clip of that special touchdown run by clicking on this link … and please feel free to pass this very special story on to others as well!

In the “NICK” of Time

I’m embarrassed. In fact, I’m ashamed to a certain extent. Ever have a bad day? I think we all have at one point or another. It’s inevitable.

As I look back over the past month, I can remember a number of various incidents that contributed to having a bad day or two. For instance:

  • Couldn’t hail a cab during a rainstorm in New York City.
  • Spilled sauce on a brand new dress shirt.
  • Got a large splinter lodged in my index finger.
  • Missed my connection in Atlanta and had to take a later flight.
  • Spilled a container of honey in my kayak.
  • Watched one of my favorite football teams lose in the last 30 seconds.

Get my drift? Life can sometimes be downright cruel!

I’m sure most of you have heard the saying: “Change Your Thinking – Change Your Life!” That’s so very true. Others call that “Re-framing.” Still works.

Let me share an example as proof of my declaration.

I thought that any one of those incidents I mentioned earlier constituted a bad day.

Then, I had occasion to see a short, touching video that changed my thinking altogether.

Can you imagine being the parent of a child who was born with no arms and no legs? What kind of future would you think that child would have? Seriously, pause and give that horrid thought some consideration. Disheartening, isn’t it?

Now consider something which may be even worse. Consider the possibility that this child was YOU! What kind of future could you foresee for yourself? Pretty dismal, wouldn’t you say?

Well, this child actually did exist. His name is Nick Vujicic, and today he’s 27 years old. He was born in Melbourne, Australia, with the rare Tetra-amelia disorder: limbless, missing both arms at shoulder level, and legless but with two small feet, one of which has just two toes.

Nick’s life was filled with difficulties and hardships. He learned to write using the two toes on his left “foot” and a special device that slid onto his big toe to grip.

This remarkable young man was determined to overcome his disability and make a difference in today’s chaotic world. He did just that! For instance:

  • He learned to use a computer and type using the “heel and toe” method.
  • He learned to throw tennis balls and plays football and golf!
  • He answers the phone, shaves and brushes his teeth.
  • He learned how to swim and surf (yes, surf!)

Nick graduated from college at the age of 21 with a double major in Accounting and Financial Planning. He began his travels as a motivational speaker, focusing on the topics that today’s teenagers face. He has spoken to more than two million people so far in churches, schools and corporate meetings in 20 countries on four continents (Africa, Asia, Australia, and North America).

Today, Nick’s a preacher, a motivational speaker and the director of Life Without Limbs, an organization for the physically disabled. Who would have guessed 27 years ago that this beautiful limbless baby would one day be someone who would inspire and motivate people from all walks of life, touching lives all over the world?

I now look back on my list of burdens that could result in a “bad day,” and I hang my head in shame. I think about Nick, what’s he’s overcome, and what he’s accomplished against all odds and I start my day with renewed hope and faith that any one of us can accomplish just about anything we make up our mind to do.

Take a look at this short video and see Nick impacting young lives as no other could do. You’ll undoubtedly tear up but you’ll feel much better as a result. Have a good day!

More Organizational and Product Origins

We recently introduced another category, Where Did That Come From?, to our growing blog content. In that opening article, we shared some interesting data on the origin of organization and product names such as 7-11, Adidas, Caterpiller, Pepsi and Skype.

Today, we continue that journey by exploring the origins of the following companies: Apple, Cadillac, Coca-Cola, Haagen-Dazs, and Lego.

  • Cadillac is a luxury vehicle marque owned by General Motors Company. Cadillac vehicles are sold in more than 50 countries and territories but mainly in North America. Founded in 1902 as the Cadillac Automobile Company, it was purchased in 1909 by General Motors and over the next 30 years established itself as America’s premier luxury car. It was named after the 18th century French explorer Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac, founder of Detroit, Michigan.
  • The Coca-Cola Company is the world’s largest beverage company, largest manufacturer, distributor and marketer of non-alcoholic beverage concentrates and syrups in the world and is one of the largest corporations in the United States. The company is best known for its flagship product Coca-Cola, invented by pharmacist John Stith Pemberton in 1886. Besides its namesake Coca-Cola beverage, Coca-Cola currently offers nearly 400 brands in more than 200 countries or territories and serves 1.5 billion servings each day. The beverage is derived from the coca leaves and kola nuts used as flavoring. Creator Pemberton changed the “K” of kola to “C” to make the name look better.
  • Despite the foreign-sounding name, Häagen-Dazs ice cream was established by Polish immigrants Reuben and Rose Mattus in the Bronx, New York, in 1961. Starting with just three flavors (vanilla, chocolate, and coffee), the company opened its first retail store in Brooklyn, New York, in 1976 and then offered franchises throughout the United States and 54 other countries around the world. Today, it offers well over 90 flavors. Häagen-Dazs produces ice cream, ice cream bars, ice cream cakes, sorbet and frozen yogurt. The name was invented in 1961 by ice-cream makers “to convey an aura of the old-world traditions and craftsmanship.” The name actually has no meaning.  The Häagen-Dazs brand is owned by General Mills. However, in the United States and Canada, Häagen-Dazs products are produced by Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream, Inc., a Nestlé subsidiary, under a pre-existing license.
  • Apple Computer was co-founded in 1976 in Culpertino, California, by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniac and Ronald Wayne. A year later Wayne sold his share back to his two partners. Wonder how he feels about that today? The company currently operates more than 250 retail stores in nine countries and an online store where hardware and software products are sold. It boasts more than 35,000 employees worldwide. The company was named for the favorite fruit of co-founder Steve Jobs and/or for the time he worked at an apple orchard as well as to distance itself from the cold, unapproachable, complicated imagery created by other computer companies at the time–which had names such as IBM, DEC, Cincom and Tesseract.

The World Needs Empathy Today More Than Ever

The older I get, the easier it is for me to be empathetic. It wasn’t always that way. For more years than I’d like to admit, I was stubborn and bull-headed. For the longest time, it was “my way or the highway!” I still have flashes of that attitude. It doesn’t hurt to stand your ground from time to time. However, today I also strive to be more empathetic when needed.

The dictionary offers a number of definitions for empathy but the following pretty well sums up the concept: “The ability to put one’s self into the psychological frame of reference or point of view of another, to feel what another feels.”

Now, in my view, that doesn’t mean that I have to agree with someone else’s point of view. It simply means that I try to understand how they feel about something. It goes a long way in helping me better communicate with that person.

I’m also a people watcher. I’ve found that it’s a tremendous way of learning people skills and discovering how we all differ in our thinking. I’m fortunate in having many opportunities to people watch. I spend a lot of time in airports in the midst of thousands of people from different locations. I do a lot of work in many large cities populated with people from locations far and wide.

At a recent leadership seminar, I was sitting at a table during a break having a Coke with 8 to 10 participants. Somehow the conversation turned to voting, and it didn’t take long for things to get heated. Half the group felt it was a privilege and responsibility to vote and that every citizen should do so at every opportunity … local, state and federal.

The other half of the group felt voting was a choice, and it came with more negatives than positives. I must admit that I’ve always leaned toward the philosophy of the first group. However, it was interesting to listen to, and empathize, with those sharing the alternative philosophy.

Here are a couple of reasons they shared:

  • “I don’t vote because registering places my name on the jury duty list, and I can’t afford to take time off work for jury duty at $12 a day! I have a family to feed.”
  • “I don’t vote because I don’t approve of or agree with either candidate. If you had a choice of voting for a proven thief or a proven liar … which would you choose if you didn’t want either leading your city, state or country? Would you vote for one of those two simply because you had the privilege of voting.”
  • “Why is it we have 50 choices for Miss America and only two, neither of which I approve of, for the highest office on earth—President of the U.S.?”
  • “Why should I take the time off work to vote when the last three elections have proven that my vote meant nothing. The election was decided by those in power—not the popular vote.”
  • “We can put a man on the moon and transplant a living heart, but we can’t properly count votes for something as critical as President of the U.S.!”

Listening to these comments and watching the sincerity with which they were shared, I suddenly had a greater respect for empathy. I didn’t have to agree with any one of those positions, but I could understand where they were coming from.

Last year more people voted for American Idol than they did for President of the United States! Maybe it’s time for those in power to be more empathetic and strive to address some of these issues that currently prevent so many from exercising this critical right to vote.

Instead, we see them on TV screaming at each other and calling each other liars. Maybe this would be a good time for some empathy.

By the way, as for those on break during the seminar … neither side budged an inch!
